Gunmen have k!lled an 85-year-old community leader, Hon. Reuben Owie, in Edo State. 

Owie, who was the Secretary of Iyowa Community, was reportedly shot d3ad by two gunmen at his residence in Iguosa, near Okhungun, Benin City. 

The spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident to journalists in Benin on Saturday, August 8, 2026.

She said the police received a report from the deceased’s son, Osayomwanbo Owie, following the attack at the victim’s residence at No. 2 Abu Street, Iguosa, off Okhunhun Road, Benin City. 

According to the PPRO, Osayomwanbo reported that his 85-year-old father was attacked by two unidentified gunmen at about 8:15pm on August 2.

“One of the assailants reportedly shot the victim in the head, resulting in his d3ath,” she said.

Ikoedem said police officers visited the scene, documented the incident and recovered relevant evidence, adding that investigation was ongoing.

She said efforts were being intensified to identify and arrest the suspects.

The police spokesperson added that the deceased’s remains were conveyed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
